Madeleine Lussi-Ratcliffe was born and grew up in Scotland, although she is half Swiss. She studied painting at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art in Dundee under the guidance of Jack Knox, Alberto Morocco, David McClure and James Morrison. After graduating with a Diploma in Drawing and Painting, she then took her Diploma in Education in Edinburgh where she began working in batik and exhibiting regularly in the Scottish Craft Centre as well as in various other galleries throughout the UK.

In 1980 she moved with the family to Brussels and began immediately to exhibit first in the British Council Gallery and later with The British and Commonwealth Womens Club. As well as teaching adults in the International School of Brussels, she also taught Art clubs for children in the British School of Brussels and the evening class for adults in St Anthony's church hall in Brussels. The rest of her time is spent on her own work - painting in oils, acrylic, watercolour, etc.

Her subjects are mostly taken from the places she visits during her holidays. She also paints still-life and portraits and her work is represented in private collections in the USA, Canada, Australia and in various European countries.

Madeleine is married to Dr. Tim Ratcliffe, Ph.D., and has three children: Nicky, Tamzyn, and Lisa. She and her husband Tim, currecntly reside in Alicante, Spain.
